Our Environment is a Boomerang!

My students need a Chemistry Molecular Model and a Molecular Model Student and Teacher Kit Set, hands-on materials to model polluting compounds in our environment!

My Students

All students, especially young elementary students, constantly hear the refrain, "Wash your hands to keep yourselves healthy!". Something so ubiquitous and sensible might also be stated like this: "Don't poison the places that you live in and the things that you eat!".

This project is aimed at our students creating chemical models to explore how poisoning our environment also poisons us, directly.

It is absolutely true, though, that our environment is only as healthy for us as the chemical compounds that we dispose of, within it.

My Project

Essentially, this project addresses environmental pollutants, such as industrial sulfur dioxide and household chemicals that are improperly poured down household drains. It is vital that our students become keenly aware of the mounting effects these pollutants pose to our city and ourselves.

How will we build this awareness?

By beginning with a model of a most benign compound: water. Using our molecular models, we will witness that water is two atoms of hydrogen and one atom of oxygen, bonded within a three-dimensional model that may be touched, held, and viewed from any angle. This, truly, is hands-on learning in action!

When water in our city atmosphere meets molecules of sulfur dioxide (deposited there by local industry), acid rain is produced. Molecules of water and sulfur dioxide combine in our city atmosphere to form acid rain. Our students will be able to explore this process by building models of water, sulfur dioxide, and the resulting acid rain.

Likewise, if we explored the effects of pouring a quart of old, lead-based paint down the home drain, we could see how these lethal compounds pollute local watersheds, all by using these materials to create, and recombine these processes.

Best of all, these modelling beads are color-coded, so identifying which elements are involved is super-easy. As a bonus, bead connecting pieces indicate either ionic or covalent molecular bonds, which will only enhance model-building and inquiry.

What can we do? This is the essential question. Our hope is, that by manipulating these model materials, we may begin to conceive of viable solutions to our polluted environment, and how these solutions will return to us, all the more safely.
