Because of the support of donorschoose.org, I have been able to provide a recorder to each of my 4th and 5th grade students to use during music class. Since January, our enrollment has increased by more than 50 students. Most of these new students are 4th or 5th graders, so I am asking for 50 additional recorders.
My students are amazing children who deserve all of the opportunities we can provide for them.
Our school is a Title I school and the majority of my students are considered to be at-risk either because they qualify for free or reduced lunch or because they are learning English as their second language. Many of my students come to school with no school supplies at all. A significant number of my students receive even their school uniforms from the school itself. Despite all of the hardship that comes from the poverty my students face every day, they are eager and enthusiastic learners who love learning and adore learning about music.
My Project
I am requesting 2 class sets of recorders which will ensure that our new students will feel welcome and at home at their new school. In our music class, playing the recorder is an everyday part of our experience so providing these recorders will enable our new students to quickly get involved. The Velcro circles are placed on the back of the recorders to help students place their left hand which bears the weight of the recorder in the proper position.
Playing the recorder is an essential part of our music classroom.
It is a wonderful introduction to wind instruments and serves as wonderful preparation for all ensemble instruments. For most of my students who do not continue with music in middle school, playing recorder is their only opportunity to learn to play an instrument.
