Our Emotions: A Student Animated Film

My students need eleven light boxes, pencils, colored pencils and erasers, printer ink and blank DVDs.

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Gambino's classroom raised $923

This project is fully funded

I teach art at a free public separate special education center for emotionally disturbed children in a large, high poverty, urban school district. The students are ages 5-12 and have been referred to our school for their difficulty in managing their emotions and behaviors. All students require positive behavior modification and incentives, regular psychological counseling, and small class sizes in order to meet their special needs.

I want to incorporate therapeutic modalities of art making with animation techniques to help students make their first animated film and develop the skills they need to manage their emotions. We need 12 lightboxes, a set of pencils, erasers, erasable colored pencils, masking tape, and printer ink. The unit will be scaffolded to build skills in sequential drawing; beginning with flipbooks and making still images move, then we will act out different emotions in front of a video camera and print out the stills from the video. Student will rotoscope, or trace the images, then we will feed them into a sheet-feed scanner and animate them. The sound will be students reading their own writing about making positive behavioral choices when they are upset. We will screen the film for the whole school, with other short animated films, submit the students' work to local festivals, and share the unit with other city art teachers.

My students are special education students but are capable of achieving at a very high level. They need exciting projects to motivate them and encourage them to realize all they can accomplish. This project is inspiring and tied into students' favorite media (cartoons and television) but requires materials we do not currently have - lightboxes, specialty drawing pencils, supplementary ink and DVDs to produce the film. The film will be not only a celebration of students' drawing capabilities but a teaching tool to help them make positive behavioral choices every day.

Your help will allow my students to develop the cognitive processing they need to manage their emotions more effectively while creating their first animated film! Imagine how amazed they will be to see their drawings move and speak, and share their movies with their friends and families! We hope this is a seed project that leads to a regular animation unit in my school and possibly my school district.
