Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

In the heart of North East Los Angeles, our school is home to various students who demonstrate resilient, empathetic, and joyous qualities. Our students emulate the versatility needed to navigate 21st century rigorous curriculum. Our students come from diverse backgrounds and are committed to be leaders in our school and our community.

Being an Inter Baccalaureate Dual Immersion Community School, the students at our school strive to find a balance through academics and social-emotional well-being, all while navigating the everyday life the community of El Sereno has to offer.

Therefore, we are excited to create this space for our students, Health and Wellness Kids Space (H.A.W.K.S.). A safe space where our students can ground themselves and unwind without the pressures of feeling like they are in a classroom.

The underlying goal of H.A.W.K.S. reinforces the importance of balancing academic success and social-emotional well-being. As a Title I School, where 100% of our student population receives free/reduced lunch, having access to resources such as the items listed in our wish list will give us tools to assist our students in their social and emotional development. Those items include: calming corner posters, artificial grass backdrop, rainbow window film, magnetic hooks, rainbow rug, lava lamp, strip lights, salt lamp, a clock, couch cover, and bean bag. The following will be used for therapeutic activities: yoga mats, fidget/sensory toys (stress balls, waterfall string toss, sensory party favors), bracelet making kit, board games (UNO, Bop It, Hasbro Gaming Perfection, Candy Land, Don't Break the Ice, Light Up Memory Game, Let's Go Fishin'), and markers/coloring pencils. Lastly, our wish list includes an SEL Book, "In my Heart" to teach and normalize that all feelings are valid.

Through community support, we are confident that the seeds we are planting will blossom this spring!
