Our Diverse Bookshelf: Read. Learn. Grow. Together.

Help me give my students diverse books that will serve as both mirrors and windows for all the unique intersectional identities in our amazing Deaf community.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Erikson's Classroom's classroom raised $395

My Project

My students are growing and learning about their unique intersectional identities. This includes different languages, cultures, countries, preferences, perspectives, and values. They do all share one common bond - they are all deaf or hard of hearing and part of the Deaf community. We empower our students as Deaf individuals to be lifelong learners and innovative thinkers with diverse linguistic, ethnic, and cultural identities who are fluent in both American Sign Language and English.

These multicultural books - including Deaf characters, strong women and girls, people of color, Muslim characters, disability advocates, international holidays, and bilingual text - will help us work towards our goal, which is to "defy the deficit model and ensure students see themselves and their communities reflected and valued in the content taught in school ..." - Culturally Responsive Teaching by Jenny Muniz

"As the world becomes smaller and increasingly diverse in its cultures and experiences, it is crucial that all children have access to books that serve as both windows and mirrors. Kids who see their own experiences reflected in books gain self-confidence, while reading about experiences that differ from their own helps kids develop healthy curiosity and empathy." - FirstBook Stories For All Project.

Thank you for helping us grow our library with multicultural books so we can see ourselves and others reflected in the stories we read.
