My Project
One of the staples of a classroom is the desks. Whether it's a lecture, a lab, a project, a group activity, or a test, students need a place to work and write.
Currently, our "desks" are a few large folding tables that had the legs welded back together by the high school shop class seven years ago.
Our tables are beginning to sag in the middle, one has a stack of paper shoved under a foot to keep it somewhat level, and all three have sections of the trim missing. The chairs are also falling apart. Some have a loose leg or a bent back. Most have at least one sizeable crack in the plastic. Our tables are treated well, but after decades of serving students, they're showing their age.
Not only are the tables on their last leg structurally, they're also difficult to move. Every day in my classroom looks different. Because of the bulk of the current tables and the limited configurations they provide, they cannot adapt to different tasks.
The desks requested in this project are mobile and capable of adapting to the wide variety of activities happening in my classroom throughout the day. Students can quickly and easily move to accommodate a class discussion, groupwork, a test, or a debate. Students in physical science can easily move them to the sides of the room to create room for a motion lab, and they can then quickly be returned to a circle for Biology's class discussion on the ethics of bioengineering the next class period. Getting new desks in our classroom would do more than just replace the broken tables - it would make the classroom space much more fluid and more easily accommodate each class's specific needs that day.
