This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
I am an English teacher of 87 eighth grade students. According to the results on standardized English tests, students lack reading habits, as well as reading comprehension skills. My students will work on reading, vocabulary and grammar. Novels and history books will awaken interest in reading various topics.
The books and materials included in this project will help my students develop their reading skills.
Materials such as a printer, markers, crayons, colored paper, cardboard, among others, will be used. Each student will develop graphic organizers, vocabulary journals, group and individual tasks where they will demonstrate their learning after reading the assigned stories. Students will be able to identify concepts such as characters, setting, conflicts, themes and events in each story. These materials will help students to be creative when working with reading and writing. They will also be able to understand new words and thus expand their vocabulary.
My goals for this project are for my students to be able to develop reading skills with books based on their interest and to improve vocabulary knowledge. In this way, contribute to the education of a bilingual citizen. Students will learn the concepts studied in class.
My 87 students are young people with limited economic resources from public schools, who have a great interest in learning the English language. Of these 87 students, 29 belong to the Special Education Program. The standardized test metrics, eighth graders scored only 14% proficient in the subject of English. The test is aligned to content standards and grade-level expectations approved by the Department of Education and measures content mastery in core subjects. As an educator, I look for alternatives every day so that my students can learn using alternative tools.
