My Project
As a first-year teacher for disabled students with extensive support needs, I'm working on stocking the classroom with essentials such as play doh, laminating pouches, and markers for my 9 wonderful students. Being a diverse population with a wide range of goals, class work may look different for each student, so to help them build essential skills we do a lot of crafts, art, and writing (or pre-writing skills)--and we have fun doing it!
In my room, everyone's daily work includes practice, practice, and more practice, meaning we use a lot of supplies to develop their fine motor skills such as painting, using scissors, tracing, and grasping items, as well as academic and pre-academic skills like writing numbers and letters, writing their names, etc.
Since many of my students are still working on writing independently and others have more functional life-skill-related goals, we use these supplies to give them alternate methods to show what they know. This may look like an arts and crafts project, tracing lines, their names, or other print, completing cut and paste worksheets, or many other things (we get creative in our room) Not to mention, their families love getting to take home their child's original work.
With the repeated practice my students need with these skills, we use a lot of supplies over the year (including supplies to clean up the mess!). It would be a great help to everyone in our classroom if you could fund these essentials to help every student develop their functional and academic skills and make some awesome crafts along the way.
