Our Classroom Needs Computers That Work

My students need computers that work! These ASUS touchscreen laptops will give us two functioning machines that students can use for reading, typing and research.

My Students

Our classroom focuses on critical thinking and independent problem-solving. The students in our third grade class design projects and meet rigorous standards by conducting research and challenging themselves by considering big ideas and stretching their understanding of the world around them.

My students are a diverse and dynamic group of third-graders attending Creative Science School in Portland, Oregon.

We are a public focus-option K-8 school that relies on inquiry and values the prior knowledge everyone brings to the classroom. We offer students opportunities to research and discover answers to their own questions. My students were born into a world of touchscreens and universal Internet access. They appreciate books, but they love to learn with computers. The are compelled to touch computer screens, even when they don't function that way. They use tablets at home and smartphones in the car to gain answers to their questions. They are motivated by the opportunity to use a computer to conduct research, to read books, to type their written projects and to communicate with students abroad. My students need to learn real technology literacy. They want to learn and need usable machines to gain the skills needed to contribute to the digital world.

My Project

The desktop computers in our classroom are older than my students! They move at a snail's pace, spit dust and require more troubleshooting than they're worth. When funded, the two touchscreen laptops will provide my classroom with real technology tools. My students are accustomed to tablets with wireless capabilities. They use tablets to read, listen to digital books, play math games, learn from videos and to illustrate. They are learning to type this year and will benefit from using the detachable keyboards with which these systems are equipped. My students will use these new machines to gather information for research projects and to communicate with students around the world. They will use the camera and microphone to meet kids in other countries as we learn about other cultures and consider the meaning of global citizenship. We still have a long way to go before we have a class set of usable computers, but these two new machines will help encourage, inspire and educate my students.

Kids need technology that works.

We cannot expect them to learn necessary computer skills by using machines that even adults won't tolerate. Your donation shows students that we value their education and their technology literacy. They will be able to manipulate the tablet as they are used to and learn to type with the attachable keyboard dock. Students with assistive technology needs will be able to write outside with the class and listen to ebooks with headphones.
