This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
We are considered a Title I school, and 95% of our students qualify for free lunch. Our school is located in South Central Los Angeles and we service 60% Latino/Hispanic and 40% African American students.
Recently there has been an influx of Central Americans that have enrolled, which means we need to provide our students with more language support.
Along with language support, we need to provide students with emotional and social learning tools.
We provide instruction for grades PreK-5th and our current school population is about 450 students.
My Project
Our classroom is completely empty of books. Students need to be surrounded by literature in order to grow up and have an appreciation for reading. It would be ideal to have a space in our classroom where they can select a book of their liking. Unfortunately, we only get to go to the school library once a week for 25 minutes and it doesn't give students enough time to browse the books and there is a limited selection for the lower grades. It would be nice if we could get grade level sets since I teach Kindergarten through third grade.
Students will benefit from these resources, including the Kindergarten, Grade 2, and Grade 3 Classic Grade Level Library, because they can sign out for the books and use them for book reports and practice with their reading.
Practicing their fluency during school time is essential to student progress. At the moment students don't have any books in my room to use as resource material. This would improve their fluency and reading comprehension skills.
