My students need more non-fiction reading collections and individual books to enhance their curiosity and love of math and science such as "Mummy Math: An Adventure in Geometry" by Cindy Neuschwander, "Space Exploration" by Carole Stott and more.
Reading is learning. It doesn't matter what students are reading, as long as they are reading.
The students at my school are from low income homes.
The majority of them participate in the free lunch program. Most have very few life experiences and background knowledge that would enhance their understanding of the subject matter being taught at school. Our goal at our school is to try to break the cycle of underachievement that has plagued this small semi-rural community.
My Project
Because my students have very limited science and math experiences, the best way to provide some of these experiences and background knowledge is through interesting, well illustrated non-fiction texts in the classroom library. Additionally, many of our students struggle to read. Providing books on topics that interest the students will encourage them to read, and make them WANT to read and learn more.
The phrase "Reading is fundamental" is more than just a phrase.
It is a way of life. Without a love of reading, our students will struggle through not only school, but life as well. Please help me put more books in my students' hands.
