This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My first graders are very bright and eager students. Everyday they walk in the door asking for details on what new thing I am going to teach them. They love hands on learning and really immerse themselves in what ever topic I present them. I'm excited about providing my students with this opportunity
My school is a Transitional Kinder to 6th grade elementary.
It is located in a very small city with very high transiency. Every year we have more and more foster students. Most of our families are Hispanic and primarily Spanish speaking. Our school is a title one school and our students benefit from 100 percent free lunch.
My Project
The educational experience of raising butterflies is something that I know my students will never forget. They will learn about the life cycle of the butterfly because they will watch the transformation day by day from the small caterpillar state all the way through the metamorphosis to a butterfly. In addition, Setting up a teaching aquarium is a great way for students of all ages to learn about a variety of topics and gain valuable life lessons such as fish anatomy or more complex topics such as the food chain, the water cycle, or the nitrogen cycle. My students will also get to read and write about their experiences on a daily bases.
Caring for the aquarium and the butterflies kindles a sense of responsibility, achievement, and a genuine desire to learn.
These tools and resources will give me a unique opportunity to teach my students in a fun and interactive manner that will hopefully last a lifetime.
