Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach an amazing special education classroom with students in grades K-3rd. These kiddos are eager to learn and have been making great progress, despite the unusual circumstances they have faced this year with distance learning. Our class is working on a wide range of skills. While academics is a central focus, there are so many other skills needed to be a successful and productive individual in our community.

Our classroom is a safe space to learn these skills.

We are working together on building our conversational skills-greetings, initiating a topic, and taking turns. We learn coping skills to control our emotions and express ourselves in an appropriate and safe way. We learn what it means to be a friend and how we can support and cheer each other on. We learn the importance of physical activity and nutrition. We explore our individuality and celebrate our differences! We learn that mistakes are ok, that things don’t always go as planned, and that our classroom is our family at school. This is a lot to learn in a school day and it takes an enriching environment to do so.

My Project

While distance learning has presented challenges in the academic classroom, it also means that all of the other services they receive have been virtual as well. Can you imagine doing social emotional learning, physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy virtually?! Let me tell you, it is HARD. Everyone is trying their best, but there has been a lot of regression in all areas due to the challenge of being online.

Now with school coming back to the classroom (YAY!!!!!) I have the opportunity to create a learning space that is conducive to meeting all of my students needs.

This means my students need access to more enriching manipulatives, engaging hands-on activities, fine motor tools, and flexible seating options to maximize their in-class environment! Unfortunately my classroom is pretty bare and because I am a brand new teacher I have very little to start with. I am making as many materials as I can, but it just isn’t enough. Thank you for considering making a donation to have a hand in turning my classroom into an enriching learning environment!
