This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My new class this year is full of vibrant, eager readers. When they entered my room on the first day they immediately went to the class library and started searching for the books they wanted to read. They are a mix of struggling readers (way below grade level) and students that just need that extra push to get them on track. Our school has provided us with some books to fill our libraries with but due to small budgets its not enough.
They depend on the school and public library to enrich their reading lives because they come from homes in which the priorities are making sure they have food to eat and a safe environment to live in.
Our public school is in a low income area and many of my students are from housing projects in the neighborhood. Some families can not afford to supply their children with even some of the basic tools needed for learning.
My Project
Our classroom library lacks a collection of books by the same author and same series. My goal as their teacher is to build that interest and spark their love of reading. I can not do that if there aren't enough books for my students to borrow and dive into their character's life, getting lost in the book. One of our units of study in the 3rd grade is on characters in books. Series books are the best books for students to read so they can connect with a character. The books I requested are all series book, (ones that my students have requested in a reading survey) that contain the same character throughout the collection. I usually have to go to the public library borrowing these books for them so we have enough for them to take home and read.
Once a child reads one of the books in the series it entices them to read more and more of the others.
It becomes an addiction with them, where they love to keep going and follow their character through many different plots! These series books I requested will be added to our class library so my students can borrow them, share them, take them home, and improve their reading skills and their love of reading! They get to "book shop" in our library once a week and borrow books.
My students want to be able to partner read and have book talks easily especially when the character/s are the same in each book! This in turn will promote stronger, lifelong readers and improve their reading levels.
