Our Class Craves a CARPET!

My students need a classroom carpet to gather around and listen comfortably to our mentor texts and complete our mini lessons. We can't take our old, hard floors anymore!

Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

There is something about listening to a story together on the carpet that still gives me the warm and fuzzies inside. My true love of reading began on the carpet, and I want my students to experience the joy of enjoying literature sprawled out comfortably with their peers, even in third grade!

I teach third grade at an inner city school, where all students receive free breakfast and lunch.

Our building is one of the oldest school buildings in the city, but we all do our part to make it a clean, vibrant, and safe environment for our students. The diverse students in my class come from all backgrounds and countries, and represent eight languages, many as English language learners! No matter their situation, they have an eagerness in them to learn and grow, which makes me strive even more to bring them the beneficial resources and classroom environment they deserve!

My Project

Currently we have old, hard, wooden floors in our classroom. When I have tried to read in a circle on the floor, students eventually complained that it was too hard on their bottoms so we retreated back to our seats. Students become engrossed in a book when they feel close to it and can see the details of it clearly. When we are spread out around the classroom, it makes it difficult for everyone to see and truly engage. Having a new carpet will help build community because we will have a place where we can meet together. I have weekly bully meetings where students problem solve their conflicts in a safe environment and gain social skills. Meeting on the carpet would create more of a family style environment. I also envision my students using the area during centers and independent reading to sprawl out and enjoy a book. I know one thing for sure - the carpet will be very loved and worn by the end of the school year!

Your donation to this project will go a long way!

Our classroom carpet will be used for so many different purposes! For example, students will connect to stories, have a cozy place for weekly bully meetings, and read comfortably during independent reading. Your donation will transform a basic carpet into a magical carpet that takes students through a ride of exploration!
