This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Our students come from all over the metro Phoenix area, and typically from a lower socioeconomic situations. We are a public school, but our students apply to attend as our enrollment is limited to about 400. This application process demonstrates that our students want something more from their high school experience: a challenge. Intensely curious and motivated, our students attend knowing they will be working harder than their peers at comprehensive campuses. This particular group of seniors excels in both academics, interpersonal, and professional skills. They continue to thrive when presented with opportunities to be creative, engaged, and caring individuals during these challenging times.

My Project

This coming school year will be the 4th year in a row we've used Sapiens as a tool in our humanities classroom. Sapiens provides an excellent refresher on world history, while arguing we hold a broader perspective on how we cooperate as a species. The book makes an excellent companion to integrate English, economics, and government concepts, as well as providing great ideas to springboard into conversations about power hierarchies, social justice issues, and the ethical decision-making that will determine our collective future on this planet. The text proves a challenging yet accessible jump into diverse perspectives these students will find in their college experiences.
