Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
My students need equity and some brotherly love! We are an emotional support classroom located in the inner city of Philadelphia, where my students are growing up in a community surrounded by drug activity and gang violence. My vision for our classroom is for my students to feel welcomed, safe, and loved. They have the right to the same educational opportunities as other students right outside Philadelphia, and they deserve the necessary resources for their additional emotional support needs.
Elementary school is the foundation for our future.
We are part of this community together. Our students in our community need a safe learning environment, engaging activities, and a support system of teachers and resources to cultivate their love of learning and to help them succeed!
My Project
My students are growing up in constant trauma: gun shots throughout the night, drug dealing, and not knowing where their next meal will come from. Imagine not having the ability to articulate and appropriately communicate your emotions in this type of environment.
These resources will supplement my lessons about talking through emotions rather than using physical violence, as my students are taught through their surroundings.
My students will learn how to identify their emotions as well as create relationships with their teachers and peers. My students are working hard to break the pattern of violence, and our calm corner will provide them with the appropriate and safe materials they need to learn about their emotions!
