This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Did you ever go the park as a kid and there happened to be too many kids and you just couldn't get a chance to play on the things you wanted? That's what our kids experience in school! With 180 kids we need a lot of equipment to help keep them engaged while playing.
Our school is located in a low-income, high poverty area of California that is predominantly Spanish-speaking.
It is an area in which violence occurs daily and its proximity to oil refineries cause health issues. Our school is a place where the children can come and know that they are safe and protected. We strive to give them a place where they can learn without worry. We are lucky to have Breakfast in the Classroom program which feeds our children breakfast in addition to the free lunch offered to every child in our school.
My Project
As a school with 8 kindergarten classes (with a minimum of 24 each) we simply do not have enough playground equipment or materials to keep them all occupied and happy during recess and lunch that can last through the years. When they are not engaged in constructive play oftentimes problems arise because they are bored. This project is requesting materials such as the cars, the play food and the puzzles that allow them to work together to set a table and "feed" their friends or race to fire or practice their letters and numbers with the puzzles! These types of games offer the kids an option that may not be as physically active but gives them a chance to work on their social skills, teamwork and community building. In our part of California, kindergarten has become very academic, so this opportunity they would have to practice social skills is so very crucial to their success in school and in life.
Not only does recess give them a break from the classroom but it is vital to their physical development (as well as their mental well-being) to have the opportunity to learn to play well with others in a meaningful, fun and engaging way!
