We attend a small elementary school on the Gulf Coast of Mississippi in a district where every student receives free breakfast and lunch. Our school has one class of each grade (Kindergarten through Fourth Grade). Our twelve little girls and nine little boys are sweet, energetic, compassionate, and eager to learn. They love computers and I Pads, and they absolutely adore reading books of all kinds. Not only do they love reading fiction and nonfiction books to quiz on Accelerated Reader, but they also love to read books at our reading carpet for their free time; in fact, they choose this activity more times than any other activities!
Technology is innovative and fun in this day and age, but there is something so comfortable and soothing about having a book in one's hands to read, and I love that my students have not lost that longing to hold an actual book that they can get lost in and enjoy!
My Project
In today's fast - paced world, technology and all of its bells and whistles are front and center. Students today are fortunate to have many opportunities to fine - tune their technological skills with computers, tablets, I Pads, and even cell phones. Our world demands that they be equipped with the ability to successfully navigate through the technological advances that are sure to continue. However, there are other, more simple facets of education that are invaluable as well.
Just as technology skills are vital to today's students' chances of being able to compete for scholarships and future jobs in the work place, life skills such as reading and writing will always hold their importance not only in education and careers, but also in a person's ability to coexist in his or her everyday life.
Books offer readers a vast background of experience without ever having to leave the comforts of the reading rug!
