Our 21st Century Computer Lab is an 18th Century Blab School
My students need 2 sets of the Hamilton Electronics Personal Headphones Lab Pack.
FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Barton's classroom raised $405
This project is fully funded
Our K-8 elementary school faces extreme challenges including poverty, neighborhood violence, and struggling readers. Thanks to hard work by our dedicated, creative teaching staff, our reading scores rose 8% this year, but we are still on academic probation. We have a fine computer lab, but our students do not have home computers. Fear of gangs prevents most of them from visiting the neighborhood library.
Our classroom teachers and the computer teacher collaborate to find ways to use the computers to engage our students and enhance learning. Studies show that learning increases when there are visual and auditory components to lessons. The Internet and our learning databases provide wonderful resources to see and hear science, history, and language arts. There are programs to improve reading and mathematics, as well. Unfortunately, we have no headphones for our computers. When students pursue individual projects or young ones practice phonics at their personal levels, the noise level soon becomes frustrating for everyone. We do not have students take historical "adventures," because the competing sounds create too much confusion. Drastic school budget cuts mean we cannot buy any resources for the lab this year.
The Hamilton Electronics Personal Headphones Lab Pack contains sturdy computer headphones. Two packs will provide enough headphones so that every student can make the most of their computer experience. There will also be enough for teachers to borrow for use in the classroom for specific projects.
With your help, our computer lab will no longer be a blab school. Instead of struggling to hear themselves think, students will hear poets reading their own work, watch videos that explain how the body works, watch and hear how to create graphs, listen to source material at the Library of Congress website, practice reading, and much more. History will come alive, as well. With your help, students will be learning in the 21st century and preparing the computer research skills they need in our modern world.
