This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on education, especially for those students who were just beginning their educational journey at the time of the initial lockdowns. It has become increasingly important to focus on their holistic development and well-being so that they may access their education to their fullest potential. Sensory processing materials and fine motor skills activities play a crucial role in supporting students during this transitional period and beyond.

Sensory supplies, such as stress balls, fidget toys, and sensory rooms, can be invaluable tools for helping students manage their emotions.

These supplies provide tactile and kinesthetic sensory input that can have a calming and grounding effect, helping students regulate their emotions. In addition, effective sensory processing underpins our nervous system's ability to attend and participate cognitively in learning, and many students today have never learned how to regulate their own bodies enough to participate effectively in class.

Fine motor skills are essential for students of all ages, as they underpin various aspects of daily life and academic achievement. The pandemic led to increased screen time and limited physical activities, potentially affecting the development of fine motor skills in students. Fine motor skills involve the coordination and control of small muscle groups, and they are vital for tasks such as handwriting, typing, using tools, and even self-care activities like buttoning a shirt or tying shoelaces.

To support students to access their school environment to the best of their ability, they must be able to develop self-regulation and fine motor skills to enable full participation and learning. These supplies will allow occupational therapy to support and develop all of these skills in our students!
