Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Project

I am a school-based occupational therapist working in a diverse school, with students across many classrooms, including those in general education and in self-contained classrooms with students who need more support. Many of the students I serve have challenges with sensory regulation, attention, motor coordination, and emotional control, all of which impact how they participate and learn in school. I am in a Title I school in which students from disadvantaged backgrounds often do not have access to these materials at home, and will benefit immensely from these materials at school.

This year, my school was able to give me a space to create a sensory room, this is a big step forward, but the room is currently empty, and I do not have the funding to purchase the materials needed to make it work for my students; with your support, I hope to fill this space with sensory tools like chew necklaces, compression vests, sensory cushions, squishy mats, liquid floor tiles, and a crash pad.

These tools can help students who are sensory seeking meet their need for movement, pressure, and oral input in a safe and focused way. They also give students who are more sensitive to sensory input a space to build tolerance through calming activities and gentle exploration.

These items will also help students build visual motor and fine motor skills through play. They are especially important for students with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and other developmental needs.

This room will be a place where students can feel safe, focused, and ready to learn. Thank you for helping me give my students the tools they need to grow.
