This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
As a school-based occupational therapist, I work with students across all grade levels including preschool-5th grade. Many of the students I work with have difficulties with various motor skills and sensory processing skills.
We have a sensory room at this school.
Our students will have the opportunity to use the ball pillows to help soothe their anxiety by squeezing them and feeling the gentle vibration. The bouncybands will provide an outlet for excess energy, prompting movement while sitting at their desks working on math, reading, or science. The chewies provide multiple ways to help stimulate the mouth and lips. They provide sensory stimulation. The sensory bottles include a different facial expression that embodies a different feeling. These bottles will help our students make connections between their own feelings and the expressions on the bottles. The adaptive paper includes tactile raised lines which will guide our students to write neatly and clearly. The pencil grips will be used for handwriting, drawing, and writing their numbers.
Our students will have the tools to use; when they are feeling frustrated they can use these tools to calm down. They can talk about their feelings. They can write about how they feel using the writing tools. This will help them when they are around other school peers and model appropriate behaviors. Instead of hitting or throwing objects, they can talk about their feelings and show the school community how to use these tools to promote wellness.
