This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
Due to Covid-19, my students have never had a "normal" school year. They don't remember what it was like to go to school without a mask and, to them, a field trip is when you use a computer monitor or video to visit a new place. This year is their first experience with attending school primarily in a room with others, instead of from home or daycare via a screen. They are learning basic academic skills and how to get along with others.
They have many gaps to fill, but they are excited about learning!
Most come from low-income families where reading and other educational materials are luxury items. Additionally, our class contains children from diverse backgrounds and circumstances. Many come from homes where English is not spoken or not spoken fluently, some are in the foster care system, and some have physical and/or speech challenges to overcome. Fortunately, at this age, all students benefit greatly from experiences and touchable, movable manipulatives, so I try to provide these opportunities as much as possible. When you donate to our classroom, you are changing lives! Thank you!
My Project
There are many vital, hands-on childhood experiences that contribute to building coordination and fine motor skills (necessary for writing), and a sense of wonder and inquisitiveness that is necessary to fully engage in learning new things. My students have missed out on much of this.
Resources requested in this project will be used to help fill in some of the gaps my students have due to attending "Camp Covid" the last few years.
Creating art helps to develop hand muscles as well as fine and gross motor skills. The art drying racks will give us a place (other than our classroom floor) to dry everyone's work simultaneously, while the finger paints and paint brushes will provide supplies for a variety of experiences. The magnifying scopes will allow my class to see an up-close view of the world, hopefully sparking curiosity and interest in science and the world around them. The egg incubator will allow us make predictions and observe the chicken hatching process, a class science project that they missed out on their kindergarten year. Finally, the HP ink will be used to fuel our classroom printer.
