My Students

I teach students with Autism who have severe deficits in social and communication skills. These deficits make it hard for them to learn in the typical classroom. Therefore, they are served in a self contained classroom setting for academics and social skills. In this setting their classwork is modified to support their learning needs while emphasizing the development of social and communication skills. Several of my students are echolalic (repeat words they have heard) and need significant support to be successful throughout the school day.

Despite the difficulties the diagnosis of Autism brings, all of my students have skills and interests that show through in their work, their actions and their talents.

One of my students is part of the school chorus, another plays the trumpet in band. Two students have been able to mainstream into the general education setting for parts of the day.

Every year our students must overcome many challenges to be successful in addition to their autism. Many of my students come from low income homes and this year they have struggled with the devastation Hurricane Florence brought to Wilmington. Yet every day they come to school ready to learn and reach new goals.

My Project

These basic classroom materials will make a difference in my students learning because it will help assure students are able to access instruction of basic organizational skills such as stapling, hole-punching, and keeping material organized.

Because of my students fine motor deficits, It is very hard for my students to access the wall mounted manual sharpener or the basic 3 hole punch.

This project will give them additional access and lead to greater independence with their organizational skills.

Additionally, wobble cushions help students focus while completing classroom tasks. The skin color crayons, and reading comprehension tasks will aid in classroom learning on a daily basis.
