Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a first-grade teacher of English Language Learners. My students come from different cultural and educational backgrounds. They all bring into the classroom their rich, cultural experiences.
In my Bilingual class, I have to teach and ensure that all my students learn all subjects, including reading, writing, math and science.
My students are at-risk and come from high poverty. Therefore, due to their limitations, my students are in need of additional resources in order to be able to learn and succeed.
My Project
Every day in class I do guided reading with my students. I work with them in small groups. In those small groups we must use guided reading books. These guided reading books are arranged in different levels. Each student is assessed to determine their own guided reading levels. For each guided reading group I must use many different level books.
It is extremely difficult to have these guided reading books, organized because we do not have a bookshelf that will keep them organized.
Therefore, we waste reading time looking for the books that we will use with my groups. Every day I have at least three groups of students work with them. I know that with the bookshelf, looking for the level books will be faster. We will just go to the bookshelf and quickly find the books that we need in order to start teaching my students reading strategies and skills. Therefore I asked for your kindness to contribute with this bookshelf that is very necessary for my students’ education.
