Organizing for Math Success (4th Edition)

Help me give my students supplies to help them organize and assess their own learning: binders, post-its, pens, clipboards and headphones.

FULLY FUNDED! Mrs. Dwulit's classroom raised $262

My Students

While not everyone feels like they are "math people," our classroom helps students believe that they can achieve greatness and change the world. They can even be mathematicians! Our school serves low-income students including a large population of English language learners and students with special educational needs. We are one of the only Title I middle schools in our district. My students have faced adversity and challenges which have left them unaware of their own potential. They are not yet aware that they are destined for greatness.

In order for my students to see what they are capable of, I create experiences and opportunities that help them to become aware of their own strengths.

They can achieve learning success only if provided with the adequate tools necessary to compete with their peer schools in higher socioeconomic areas. Poverty is not an indication of potential. Students should not be limited in their potential because of their lack of resources. My students never give up and I will never give up on them.

My Project

In our inclusion math class, students will be using these materials in order to organize their learning experience and assess their learning in our math classroom. This is the 4th edition because with generous donations in the past, I was able to fund binders for all of my students. Not all students are able to afford binders and school supplies. However, after implementing an organizational system that allows all of my students to set and monitor both goals and standards, review data and assess learning, my students have great successes each year.

Over the course of several years, many of our math class materials have been consumed by learning and now need to be replaced.

With class binders and dividers (from construction paper), students will be able to have a section for their notes, diagnostic data, assessments for reflection and study tools. This will make a difference in our classroom by helping students to understand the importance of both organizing their work tools. They will be using headphones for individualized learning plans through iReady, green pens for assessing their learning and dry erase clipboards and post-its to facilitate peer-reviews and collaboration.

This will improve our classroom environment by providing materials for all of the students, and not isolating students who are unable to afford the supplies. My math students will be able to see how useful organizational and self-assessment are tools in helping them to learn and can take these strategies with them beyond our classroom.
