My Students

Hello! I teach 8th grade English Language Arts and Reading at a Title I school. I knew very early on that I wanted to be a teacher because I wanted to pass on my passion for literature and reading to the next generation.

My students mostly live in an urban/ industrial area near the school.

Many of them come from large families and are expected to help take care of their siblings. I know that a large number of them deal with a lot more than the average kid, day-to-day. For many of them, going to school is a reprieve.

I see my students work hard in my class day in and day out, regardless of what might be going on in their lives. Every small victory for them is a victory for me as well. It is an educator's job to give students the tools they need to succeed, and I take my job very seriously.

My 8th graders are something extraordinary. They are fiercely loyal, witty, funny, smart, and definitely drive me crazy at times, but there is truly no better group of kiddos. I want to give them every opportunity for success possible.

My Project

My students are not familiar with a lot of organization. By using hanging files, folders, and a storage bin system in my classroom, I help to teach them a valuable life skill. Organization is paramount to running a smooth classroom, and I'd be lying if I said it didn't help keep me in check as well! The file folder system and classroom keeper allows me to transition smoothly between activities, easily locate any missing or makeup work a student might have, and it helps me to keep track of where in the curriculum each of my classes are. It also allows the students to take charge of their learning and progress, as each class period has it's own set of file folders, and each student their own folders. They use these folders to keep track of current work, graded papers, extra credit, and missing assignments. Their folders will be stored/ organized by class period in the file boxes I have listed on this project. My goal is for every single one of my students to be able to easily locate/ identify any work they might need in class, ultimately teaching them that organization means better learning.

In addition to the organizational aspect, I do my best to create lesson plans and activities that are exciting and engaging for my students.

Part of that stems from my being able to print certain things in color. Our copier at work is only black and white, but fortunately Donors Choose helped fund a color printer for my classroom. The only downside is that the cost of ink can add up, so I've requested some replacement cartridges.

I also do my best to create a classroom environment that is visually stimulating and engaging by hanging up posters and anchor charts using packing tape.
