My Students
Fifth grade is a big year! There is a lot of growing and learning that takes place over the course of this year. One of the things my 5th graders learn is note-taking. To learn to be an organized learner, they need the proper tools.
This coming school year, I will have two classes of energetic, hard-working 5th grade students.
My students attend school year-round at a magnet school in Connecticut. They come from a wide variety of towns and cities in the area, but many are from urban settings. My students enjoy tackling challenges and having (friendly) competitions (both in the classroom and on the athletic fields). They are creative and innovative. They pride themselves on exhibiting our school-wide learner expectations both in and out of the classroom.
My Project
My students will use the materials during the course of our entire school year (July though May). Each student will be given two binders - one for math and one for science. In these binders, they will take and keep notes. They will learn how to be an active listener through note-taking. They will also learn how to stay organized as they are taught to organize their notes by topic (using the dividers in the binders). Their binders will allow them to access their notes, gaining independence and ownership of their work. Pencil pouches will ensure that each student has a safe place to keep their learning tools so they are always prepared. Clipboards will allow them to take their learning to different parts of the classroom or school. They will not be confined to a table or desk while they are learning.
By providing each student with the same items, we can eliminate need and level the playing field for all students, regardless of their resources at home.
They will take the binders and the organizational skills with them as they transition into middle school next school year.
