My students are resilient, creative, curious, funny, and hard-working 3-5 year-olds who attend Pre-K at a Washington, DC public school. Our full-time classroom is part of an elementary school in a neighborhood where most students are considered to be "at-risk", determined based on socioeconomic needs. My students have been diagnosed with autism or other communication related disabilities. Regardless of these labels, my students consistently prove what is possible with hard work and dedication.
One of the most important aspects of creating an organized, functional, and accessible learning space is having the proper storage solutions.
Currently, our classroom lacks enough shelves to organize our materials in a way that allows students to independently access materials and fully engage with the lessons we are teaching.
This project requests sturdy, child-friendly shelves that will help us keep our materials organized and within easy reach. Many of my students benefit from visual and tactile cues, so having clearly labeled shelves will support their ability to independently choose and use materials in the classroom.
By having accessible storage, I will be able to create more engaging and individualized learning opportunities for my students. They will have the chance to explore, learn, and interact with materials that are specifically tailored to their unique needs and abilities. Additionally, organizing our classroom with the proper shelving will reduce clutter and distractions, which will help my students stay focused and engaged in their learning.
