My Students
"Organization is not an option, it is a fundamental survival skill and distinct competitive advantage."
My students come from a place where organization is not something that is taught but is expected. It is imperative that every child learns how to organize themselves and the space around them.
My students come from an urban area and a public school where the majority are facing the monumental challenges of poverty.
Unfortunately, some of the many challenges they face on a daily basis is keeping their materials organized. So many aspects of their lives are chaotic and unorganized. I want school, and specifically my classroom, to be the safe and organized space they can come to and know what to expect. I have learned over my years as an educator that my students strive for organization and knowing that all of their materials and OUR materials have a special place. I have noticed that my students desire the structure and systems we have put in place and with these few organizational tools everything in our classroom should have a wonderfully established place.
My Project
I have requested a "Read and Relax Book Cube" which is both a storage space for books, and a comfy seat for students to read on. I have noticed that students become even more engaged in their reading if they have nice comfortable spots to focus on being a reader. I also have many educational and classic picture books that need a good spot, and this cube would be the perfect addition to our literacy classroom!
I have also requested a type of chart holder. I realize how important beautiful charts are, but I have also noticed that my students often look around to room to find a chart we had recently worked on but because of the layout of my classroom I am limited on wall space. This would be a great reminder for the students of what we are working on currently, so they can refer to the charts without asking me to dig them out of the closest. This might also give me an opportunity to display even more student work!
Lastly, I have requested book bins for our guided reading books.
Please!
Help my amazingly smart and motivated students learn the organization skills that they so desperately need. Even though many of these materials seem to be used in the classroom and not for specific students I am guaranteeing that when my students see how important and helpful organization is, they will emulate this in their own lives. I know that clutter is so detrimental to learning and focus, and I am confident that these l tools will support us in our educational journey.
