This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
Our high school is a Title I visual and performing arts school in downtown Los Angeles. Across eight periods, I teach math to around 200 students who are incredibly creative, hardworking, and resilient. However, many face challenges that impact their ability to stay organized and fully engage in learning.
To support them, I am requesting storage cubbies for student workbooks, materials caddies for essential tools like calculators, rulers, and pencils, sign holders to display vocabulary words and sentence stems, and pencil sharpeners.
These resources will help create a structured and engaging learning environment where students can focus on learning rather than searching for and retrieving supplies.
My goal is to provide students with the organizational tools they need to take ownership of their learning. Our school has a full inclusion curriculum, which means that students in need of learning accommodations and special education support are part of the general education classes. Many students struggle with keeping track of materials, which leads to lost work and frustration. By having dedicated storage solutions and essential supplies readily available, they can prioritize their classwork and build confidence in their math skills. I hope to create a classroom structure that fosters student responsibility, where students grow to solve problems on their own rather than always relying on an adult.
What makes my students special is their determination and creativity. Despite the challenges of a high-needs school, they embrace learning with enthusiasm. With the right resources, they can channel their strengths into understanding mathematical concepts in meaningful ways. Your support will help them stay organized, engaged, and empowered to succeed.
