We are a blessed group of students. Our children are all between the ages of 3 and 4 years old. They have all been diagnosed with different disabilities. All of them have goals related to fine motor and social skills. They have trouble using their hands to grip items such as cars, small building blocks, and crayons. The majority of our students are autistic, downs, and are medically fragile; and they require a lot of different activities. Most of them live in low-income apartment households.
With our children having a large range of disabilities, hands-on learning is very important.
Many of our students are non-verbal and have limited mobility. They get really excited when they can work to accomplish a learning task. Using our light up table has been really fun and a wonderful way for them to accomplish their fine motor goals. We have used the table as a center time that can be used either as a group or a single person activity. The items that I am requesting will help our students to be able to maintain the sensory items in a organized way. This has been a wonderful way that the children can learn and grow.
My Project
We have been blessed with a new light up table for our students to learn from. We have found that a clear tray that sits on top of the table can help our students to keep the sensory items on the table. For the students that have fine motor disabilities this would give them sides to help them slide the items up on to pick them up. We also work on sorting items and also teach them how to pattern so those trays will really help them to keep it in a organized way.
For most of our children reaching their goal is really hard because of their disabilities.
The sensory items have really helped our medically-fragile students to have fun and excel in accomplishing their goals.
