My Students

The transition from middle school to high school is a momentous occasion on every student's journey. Our incoming ninth graders are emerging from an academic year that they will never forget. Many have not been in a physical classroom space for over a year – while others participated in hybrid options that saw in them both in the classroom and then working from home on different days. This transition will be unusual, and as teachers it is our responsibility and desire to make their experience as positive and as memorable as possible. There will understandably be a continued strong emphasis on the use of online platforms to create opportunities for learning. However non-screen interactions will be very important, especially for those students who struggled with this heavy dependence on technology.

Most of the over 100 students that I will meet during semester 1 are from low-income households and many belong to large families where providing resources for all children at the start of the school year can prove challenging.

It is my hope that we can partially bridge this resource gap and ensure that students focus is on making a strong start to the new year.

My Project

Over the past year students did all of their work online. A common desire from many was the need to take a break from the screen. Some of the students in the classroom even asked if some activity / lab reports could be completed on paper. It is important that we find a balance that would allow students to maximize both learning modalities.

Interactive science notebooks provide the opportunity for students to organize their work and make meaning of their learning in a creative way.

Anchor charts help to support and guide this learning.
