Organization to Foster Independence!

My students need an organized library system so they can shop for books independently and new tables for them to work in groups more easily.

My Students

I teach Kindergarten at an urban elementary school in a low-income/high poverty school district. It is an exceptionally diverse student body- racially, culturally, and socio-economically. Many of our students speak languages other than English. The majority of our students qualify for free or reduced-price lunch. My students come to school with diverse backgrounds, cultures, languages, and families.

My students love to read!

Our school community embraces this diversity and honors all children. Despite a variety of challenges our students may face, one common thread among them is their complete excitement for learning and engaging in school activities. The students are eager to be at school and are proud of their academic and social successes. We have good books for teaching leveled reading but the bookshelves we have are falling apart. We need new book shelves to get our library up and running!

My Project

My students are in their first year of school. With that comes a lot of learning! I want my students to learn how to be independent and organized. Being able to have self selected books is a fun way to promote independence. By using stickers to level and label books in our class library students will know where and which books they can check out. Once they have chosen their books to read each week they will keep the books at their desk in the clear plastic envelopes so that it is easy to stay organized and see what is inside.

Having new round tables for students to work at will create a fun and inclusive working space.

The round tables will allow for groups to work more closely and will prevent any singular student form being left out because of their seat being further away.
