Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

Organization is the key to success! A flood of materials lives on our classroom tables and floor. Even adults struggle with keeping their desks and papers organized, so imagine a class of first graders without desks or cubbies.

My students attend a K-8 school in a rural part of town.

The majority of the population is Hispanic, so most of my students are English Language Learners. About 95% of my students eat the federally funded lunch. They are extremely bright, but with lack of supplies or funding, my students do not always get the same opportunities as students in other districts. My students are eager to learn. Our school is an active part of the community, creating a family environment within our halls.

My Project

The chair pockets will give students an individual location for them to save their folders, binders, and notebooks. Instead of wasting time walking to their backpacks, they will be able to reach behind their chair and pull out the folder they need. During activities that require more table space, students won't have to leave their materials on the floor causing many to trip or a sea of paper to grow. The extra 5 chair pockets will be used during reading group time, so that instead of students having to carry everything to the reading group the materials will already be located in the chair pockets for them. Their organization skills will increase along with their sense of responsibility in taking care of their belongings. We will have less time focused on where to put our materials and more time focused on the lesson.

Our classroom has tables and no cubbies, so the chair pockets would be an essential organization tool.

We use community table bins on each table that hold pencils, crayons, glue, scissors, a small book for each student, and small math review notebooks. Unfortunately our table bins can only fit so much! The students have no place to put their folders, textbooks, or binders causing a mess of paper on our floor and tables. The chair pockets will organize our students and our classroom.
