Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

I teach at a Title I school on the Upper Westside of Manhattan. My students come from economically marginalized communities and many have weak educational backgrounds. All of my students come to school eager to learn something new every day even if the teenager in them cannot demonstrate the emotion. My students have many personal challenges that make school and the requirements of school particularly daunting. That said, all of my students are held to the highest of expectations, both intellectual and professional.

My students are inquisitive and curious about other cultures.

Many of my students live very insular lives even though they live in NYC. While my students are exposed to other peoples and cultures, that contact is superficial. In my Social Studies classroom, units are anchored in geography, driven by primary sources and analyzed through complex secondary sources. Social Studies is the perfect vehicle to teach history, inculcate professionalism and cultural capital to society's most marginalized students.

My Project

Success in high school is dependent on certain factors, chief among them is organization. Students must be able to access the days prior notes (and their work throughout the year) in order to be successful in the classroom and to study. My students enter high school wholly unprepared for the rigorous schedule of classwork and homework. Students that are unorganized are rarely successful. Supplying students with binders alleviates much of the silly time spent around students looking for work, losing work, etc. The binders and organizational materials have had the most profound impact on the education and learning of my students. I really cannot begin to understand the different psycho-social reasons for this but it has been a fascinating phenomena to watch. Students take ownership for their learning process and the class as whole takes responsibility for their class culture. Organization takes the panic out of walking into class.

I cannot emphasize enough the radical impact that providing binders and organizational materials has had on my classes.

This grant is worth every penny as students learn the organizational strategies for success that will see them through high school and into college. Many of my students who have graduated and gone on to higher education have told me that the strategies they learned in my classroom prepared them for college and have been instrumental in their success.
