My Students

I am a special education teacher in a self-contained autistic classroom in a Title I school. 95% of the students in our school qualify for free and reduced-price lunch. There are lots challenges each school year meeting the needs of the students academically, socially, and emotionally.

My students, who fall all across the autism spectrum, and struggle with communication skills and academic achievement, still come to school, work hard, and do their best no matter what obstacles they face.

They have a desire to achieve their goals and we do everything we can in the classroom to help them get there!

My Project

Organization in a special education classroom is paramount to facilitating a student's engagement and learning experience. Everything must be clearly labeled, color-coded, and flexible to help with organization. It also helps the students find their own work which increases independence and will help staff as well, which increases student engagement and learning while decreasing downtime and behaviors.

We are looking for a variety of materials to help accomplish this classroom organization and increase the very important skill, student independence.

Students all have individual goals they are working on, so no one has the same type of work. Folders keep their work very neatly organized. Pocket charts are great storage for these folders. It creates quick access, as everything is sorted neatly into groups which decreases downtime, thus reducing unwanted student behaviors. This helps to keep the students engaged and ready to learn. Wardrobe racks are used to hold pocket charts with visuals for student lessons. They help to create a flexible environment which is essential in a classroom like ours. Binding spines that can be reopened allow for staff to add and remove work as the students’ skill levels go up. Binder rings hold the various flashcards we use in the classroom, whether it be alphabet, numbers, addition, sight words, or CVC words for quick practice while in their small learning groups, in line on campus, or for use at home. 3 drawer bins are for holding independent work tasks that each student is assigned during their small group instruction. The more we organize, the more time we have to focus on what really matters, and that’s teaching our students how to be successful, independent, and keeping them fully engaged in their learning.
