Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Students
I am a social worker in an elementary school in an urban school district. About 15% of the student body are students with special needs. Our special needs students have a range of disabilities including autism spectrum disorder, communication impairments, developmental disabilities, and learning disabilities. The students receive a wide range of services such as physical, occupational, and speech therapies as well as academic support services.
The students require a variety of hands-on instructional aids and resources to successfully access the curriculum.
They are tactile and visual learners.
My Project
When students are organized, it makes things easier for them. Teaching students to be organized is one of the best ways to set them up for academic success. Students with learning disabilities tend to have difficulty organizing their schoolwork which affects their ability to succeed academically. My students would benefit with something in place to help them organize their notebooks and folders by subject area.
With easy access to materials for completing assignments, students are allowed more time on task for learning and they can have a positive sense of control in their learning.
I would like to provide my students who have learning disabilities with a binder and color coordinated folders and notebooks to be organized by the main subject areas (math, language arts, science, and social studies). Colored notebooks and folders will allow the students to easily identify a subject by color. If each student is able to access their materials in one location, this should help them be ready for class, remember materials to take home for homework, and return completed homework to the teacher the next day.
The binders with notebooks and folders will be distributed to the students at the beginning of the school year. At the end of the school year, the binders will be returned to the teachers to be used with their students in subsequent years. The notebooks and folders will remain in each student’s possession. Durable folders have been selected for students which can be used over multiple academic years.
