Organization For Literacy Materials in First Grade Classroom!

Help me give my students the literacy resources and support they need through the organization of a file cabinet with hanging file folders!

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Blumenthal's classroom raised $509

My Students

I work in a Title One school with students who come from a low socioeconomic background. Some of these students live in apartments while others live out of hotels. My school provides free breakfast to every student. We also offer free or reduced lunch to a majority of our students. In addition to this we have items that are free to take throughout the school and from the guidance counselor which includes backpacks, hats, gloves, coats, books, school supplies, canned and boxed goods to eat over the weekend, and so much more. These students need all the support and resources they can get. It is so important for me to instill a love of learning at a young age.

My Project

I absolutely love teaching literacy and know the importance of reading and writing at a young age. Language Arts also includes sight words/spelling, word study/phonics, and various reading skills such as ABC order, main idea, compare & contrast, cause & effect, fact & opinion, and so much more.

As you can see, a lot is involved in teaching literacy.

With that comes a ton of materials that need to be housed and organized in a way that I can easily find what I need. Time is of the essence and in a Title I school especially, every second is valuable. We as teachers do not have time to dig through piles of papers to find something we need, which is why a file cabinet with hanging file folders is my next project!

There are four drawers in the file cabinet and I plan to organize my literacy materials like this:

Drawer 1: phonics games

Drawer 2: phonics activities by order of week

Drawer 3: sight words by level

Drawer 4: sight word games

A lot of my students do not have books or paper at home which is why it is so important for me to have a classroom full of materials that are easy for them to access. Please make this organized teacher's dream come true! Thanks in advance.
