Organization First: Personal Desk Organizers for Successful Mathematicians

Help me give my students personal desk organizers to do all the things that will make them successful in this 21st-century learning environment.

My Students

My students are 7th graders who come from highly diverse and impoverished neighborhoods in Indianapolis, Indiana. In my classroom, my students are able to find a safe space to take on the challenge of learning mathematics. My students are held to high expectations, which they strive to meet each day. We encourage each other to do our best.

My students are curious about how mathematics can be used in the real world.

Therefore, my students are given the opportunity to experience mathematics as a hands-on process where they have an opportunity to discuss, use manipulatives, work in cooperative groups, use technology to expand on concepts, and use writing to express their thinking.

My Project

The personal desk organizers I am requesting will allow my 150 students to keep their personal math items (folder, dry erase supplies, pencils, etc.) at their desks. When students transition to my classroom, they will not need to worry about forgetting much-needed supplies in their locker or in another teacher's classroom.

By donating to our project, you will not only help to improve and increase student attention and focus, you will ultimately help to increase their academic achievement.

The desk organizers I am requesting will be attached to the back of each desk in my classroom. The desk organizer will give students easy access to their math folder, writing utensils, dry erase boards, and a stylus for their Chromebooks. Even though my 7th grade students are great at getting their supplies and materials during class time, it is distracting for many students who have focusing issues and they miss out on important instruction from either myself or other students. The desk organizers will help my students transition from one activity to the next without wasting instructional minutes gathering and passing out supplies. Students will practice personal responsibility by keeping their desk organizer neat and ready for use each day.
