Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

Celebrate Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

At our school we are growing 17 beds of organic vegetables and flowers to feed ourselves, family and the local community. From farm to table, we are what we eat. The students in the Organic Garden Club will be responsible for raising funds to sustain this massive garden for years to come.

The 3rd through 5th grade students are volunteers involved in running the farmers markets and special family nights that will raise funds for the garden.

The students who volunteer for this club will be donating their time before and after school to run the market. The business side of being a self-sustained garden means that these kids will develop a market plan to set up and sell to the public. Many of these students have little to no experience working with the soil, let alone the public, and are eager to understand all the complexities of sustainable agriculture. More than half of the schools population are living in apartments with little to no green space. Having these lush and bountiful beds of watermelon, tomatoes, zucchini, corn, and much more, is an exciting prospect that will get these kids eating healthy as they learn how to run and maintain a business.

My Project

With this garden comes the great responsibility of maintaining it in a sustainable manner for future students. This means that the students will have to understand all the needs that the garden has in terms of money. By planting various crops that will be harvested at different times each year, the students of our school will be able to run several farmers markets that will directly benefit the local families and community. The monies raised will be put directly back into maintaining the garden, paying for school breaks, summers services, seeds, repairs, and tools for the garden. We are starting from scratch, so we need a cash box, several calculators, bags to put the produce in, a blackboard to illustrate prices and specials, and an overhead tent to shade to the students as they ring up customers. It is important that the kids make the connection of sustainability-without the farmers market, we cannot maintain the gardens. These basic tools will help keeping our gardens growing.

One of the biggest components of having such a large garden is being able to keep it going year after year.

Running a local farmers market from our school will give the students in this club the experience of interacting with the public, as well as, running a profitable business. The materials that we are asking for will be the foundation of this business and will be put to good use.
