Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month
This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because
it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.
My Project
My 1st-3rd grade students use our Orff instruments (barred instruments like xylophones, metallophones, and glockenspiels) throughout the year to accompany singing games and to learn melodic concepts, like solfege (do, re, mi, fa, sol, la, ti do). Because different grade levels come to music each day, I find myself scrambling to change the class set-up in between classes. Even with student help, it is often difficult to move my bigger Orff instruments to different parts of the classroom. We have two bass xylophones and one bass metallophone that are rather heavy, so I use plastic bucket lids to help with sliding them without damaging the bottom. The lids aren't secure and sometimes slide off, so we have to go slowly. It would be great to have a more secure system with wheels to move the big Orff instruments more easily AND to be able to adjust it to different heights so students can play standing or sitting!
