My Students

Do you remember how much fun you had in music class as a child? My students love coming to music class, and they LOVE to play instruments.

My students attend a school that is in a very urban area.

They are students from kindergarten through fourth grade. Our school district, as is the case in many areas, does not have extra funds to purchase as many instruments as I need for my classroom. My students are very creative, and love to sing and dance. They also love to play on the instruments. They are very willing to learn music, and have responded well to my class!

My Project

I use Orff instruments to teach all kinds of musical concepts. They learn how to play and respond to rhythms, how to read music, how to improvise, and how to play as a group. They learn about teamwork when they play together. They learn how to think outside the box when they improvise. They learn how to decode the musical language and transfer that into something they can play on their instruments. These instruments are invaluable in helping them expand their fine motor skills as well as their musical skills. I requested some stands for my bass instruments, because this will help keep them in better shape for years to come as well as helping my back with moving them around the room! I requested replacement parts to fix some of my existing instruments that can not be used right now. This will help keep my instruments in good shape for many years to come!

My students' eyes light up any time they come into my classroom and see the instruments sitting out.

They love to sing, but playing the instruments gives them that added sparkle in their eyes. Many of these students do not get to experience music in a group for a variety of reasons, so I feel this project is very important to them. They get invaluable experience in elementary school when they participate in a group project that works as closely together as performing in a group.
