My Project
Sixth-grade students study the earth and moon relationship based on the phases of the moon. Students study how the moon phases happen and the effects of the moon on the earth, especially when it comes to the ocean tide and certain weather changes. Students will use Oreo cookies, a paper towel, a plastic knife, and colors to create the phases of the moon on a paper plate. Students will scrape and break Oreo cookies to illustrate the phases of the moon as the earth rotates and revolves. Students will draw and color the earth in the center of the plate and then arrange the cookies around it beginning with the new moon and ending with the waning crescent. This activity enables students to see that the changes in the moon are a continuous cycle. Materials for each child:
