Celebrating Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month

This project is a part of the Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month celebration because it supports a Latino teacher or a school where the majority of students are Latino.

My Students

My school is an ethnically and socioeconomically diverse city school in an older neighborhood. The students that will benefit from this project are 5 and 6 year olds, for most of whom, this is their first experience with learning in a formal setting. They are so excited to learn about the world around them! When I can use that budding excitement and create learning momentum with it, the perfect environment for character development and life skills can be created!

When you are 5 years old, the world seems so big!

Heroes are found around every corner, and the world is full of incredible people who have done amazing things that you know nothing about. I want to allow my students to learn about some people who have shaped and changed the world they live in by reading child friendly biographies that will inspire them to take action in their own communities.

My Project

The "Ordinary People Change the World" books will allow my children to learn about real people who have impacted their communities.

Biographies about MLK Jr, Hellen Keller, Gandhi, Jane Goodall, and Harriet Tubman will not only teach diversity, tolerance, and acceptance, but the importance of risk-taking, communication, and cooperation.

I teach at an IB (International Baccalaureate) school, and I want to inspire my students to take action to change the world around them. These books will do just that! By reading these books my students will be able to study the character traits of successful and impactful people from around the world and the ways in which change can be brought about. We will look at how these influential people encountered adversity and what they did to overcome it!
