Orchestra Instruments for Hands-On Music Experience

My Project

Orchestra is a very large topic that is covered in a number of grade levels at the elementary level. Teaching about a wide-array of instruments, their sounds, their pitch ranges, and families is difficult to do without showing concrete, tangible instruments to the students. Research has shown that students have a deeper understanding of content knowledge and retain information they've learned much longer if they can experience the content in a concrete way. By giving my students access to real-life instruments from each family of the orchestra, they will be able to experience and manipulate them in order to better connect what they learn abstractly to the concrete. I will be able to demonstrate what each instrument sounds like and give students a chance to play the instruments, explain parts and their functions, and better show the difference between instruments across families of the orchestra.

The addition of orchestra instruments in our classroom will not only improve student learning but also love and appreciation of the arts.

Arts programs are slowly being cut everywhere. In order to keep them alive, students need to understand their value and how topics like music can enrich their lives. If students can have the opportunity to play, manipulate, and experiment with various authentic instruments of the orchestra, they may be more inclined to learn to play on in the future!
