My Project

There is no such thing as a "typical" World Language classroom. In my school of over 2400 students, we offer 12 French classes. As the students move on to higher levels, the options decrease. With limited options, I welcome students of all ability levels, with unique needs, in one class. I have neuro-divergent learners, neurotypical learners, special needs learners, those with dyslexia and dysgraphia, students with academic and artistic giftedness, and students with visual and hearing impairments. Each of these students has their own strengths and works at a pace that matches their ability level.

One of my strengths as a teacher is recognizing when a student needs differentiation and finding the resources to provide extra support for their unique needs.

Some students require more time and attention, while others work quickly and are left waiting for their classmates to catch up. In previous years, my most useful tool was my classroom library. I would encourage students to pick out a book and work on their reading skills while they wait for me to move on. However, one thing that these kids don't want (or need) is what they perceive as "extra work".

I have been gathering digital resources with which students can engage, that will improve their language skills, and that are "fun" enough to keep students from perceiving that they are learning or doing extra work. Adding this iPad to my toolbox will allow students access to learning apps that provide opportunities for them to interact with videos, listen and record speaking practice, read annotated books with pronunciation and definitions, and much more. I already have one iPad that students fight over and I would love to add a second one to meet the demand.
