Oprah's Book Club Has Nothing On Us!

My students need 30 copies each of 5 different titles, including "The Yearling" and "Bud, Not Buddy".

FULLY FUNDED! Ms. Harrison's classroom raised $1,161

This project is fully funded

Even though my children struggle with reading, they love taking books out of my classroom library! I teach over the span of 4th to 7th grade with a Special Education focus. This involves reading and math support. Many of my students are below grade level - a lot struggle especially with their reading skills and comprehension. But they still love to read! Conquering chapters books makes them especially proud. It is an inner-city public school where resources are scarce.

As resources are so hard to come by, the idea of creating a Book Club for my students is very ambitious. I want to take their love of reading and promote it in a structured setting - one outside the confines of the regular school day, without the pressure of grades and performing academically. I want them to be able to come together and read books for enjoyment, discuss them with their peers, and have a safe place to go after school, one that will help them make more progress with their reading levels. I also want to introduce them to classic young adult books. But to do this, I first need the books!

I need sets of thirty of five different books. This way, there will be enough resources to go around (something that doesn't always happen at my school.) If they have their own copy of the books we are reading in the book club, they can sign it out, take it home, and read it at their own pace each week. I have chosen a variety of books, ones that I hope with capture their interest - from the modern phenomenon "Harry Potter," to a traditional classic like "The Yearling," and even a play based on "The Diary of Anne Frank," which we can read and then act out as a group. These will spark their interest, give them characters to whom they can relate, and have them learning even when they don't suspect it! An after school club is the perfect environment for this.

By funding this project, you will help my children to discover or enhance their love of reading. You will be giving great books to great kids, and help them improve their reading levels and get in touch with some fantastic literature - stories you yourself may love! Many people enjoy the benefits of a book club - with your help I can bring that experience to the children of the community I serve.
