My Students
I want to spark a love for learning in all my students! I teach 4th graders at at Title I school in a small, suburban community in Sonoma County, CA. On the surface, the community does not look to be economically disadvantaged. However, the majority of my students receive free or reduced price lunch. Many of my students lack access to technology and internet at home. A large population of our students are English language learners.
Within the last couple of years, our school has begun a shift towards 21st century learning.
We as teachers are having to prepare students to be successful learners and workers in an information based society, however our school lacks a current, research based curriculum in language arts.
In order to provide our students with engaging instruction in literacy, we must supplement with materials that are high in interest to our students. In doing so, we are able meet today's rigorous standards while exposing children to rich and well written literature. Literacy is such an important skill within 21st century learning, and goes beyond just basic reading comprehension. My goal is to help each of my students find a love of reading that grows with them.
My Project
Children should be able to read rich and engaging literature as part of their English language arts program. As it stands right now, our language arts curriculum is very outdated. It is difficult to help my students find a love of reading and appreciation for good literature when the stories do not captivate them. I believe, for them, there is nothing better than actually holding a good novel in their hands. I would love for my students to have a class set of The One and Only Ivan by Katherine Applegate and Number the Stars by Lois Lowry.
The beauty of reading a novel is how the learning is not confined to just reading, rather it crosses many curricular areas.
Reading these novels will enrich our units of study in history, social studies, math, and language arts! In particular, I plan on using these novels in partnership with our opinion writing unit. Forming an opinion and writing about it with supporting details is easier when you have some background knowledge to draw upon.
I know my students will enjoy reading these novels. They are both very engaging and relatable for children. It will be exciting to see the many connections they can make across all subjects. Through this, my hope is that it will be a solid foundation for them to love reading literature.
This project will directly impact historically underfunded classrooms.
